The University of St Andrews has been awarded £1.5 million from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to improve public benefit research through the provision of a network of micro ‘safe settings’ that support remote access to research datasets held by Data Centres across the UK. Designed at the University, a SafePod replicates a traditional ‘safe setting’ with access control, CCTV and secure storage for IT equipment. No datasets are held within a SafePod. Instead a secure connection is provided to a Data Centre holding project datasets, giving a researcher local remote access to project datasets, without the need to travel to a dedicated safe setting provided by a Data Centre.
