Companies across the north-east looking to boost digital skills among their workforce have been invited to join an apprenticeship programme.
Code, a national digital skills academy based in Sunderland, and Seriös Group, which is headquartered in Newcastle and specialises in business intelligence, data analytics, testing and quality assurance, are looking for likeminded firms to join them as they train the next generation of data and test experts.
Seriös has committed to recruiting and investing in its workforce through nationally-recognised apprenticeship programmes, with a number of new apprentices joining the business in June to become data analytics and software testing consultants.
There are additional spaces on the innovative 24-month programme, which will see apprentices put their learning into practice while working and embedding within their respective employers.
Typical job roles within organisations might be data analysts, test analysts, test engineers, data managers, test managers, data scientists, data modellers, data architects and data engineers.
The programme will see apprentices gain industry-recognised ‘level 4’ qualifications, learning how to collect, organise and study data to provide business insight.
Code works with companies of all sizes based throughout England to upskill their staff, supporting firms to find the best way to use their Apprenticeship Levy – a government scheme introduced in 2017.
It provides a range of training solutions around digital skills, such as digital support technicians, cyber security technologists, software developers and network engineers.
Employers can benefit from current government incentives of £3,000 per new apprentice start, and will have access to funding available to offset the costs associated with training their apprentices (typically up to £15,000 per learner) through recognised training provider Code.

Code is the apprenticeships division of Rebuyer, which works with companies across the UK to recycle their old IT equipment to protect the environment and support families in the north-east who don’t have access to laptops, tablets or PCs.
It is part of the Donate Digital campaign to tackle digital poverty across the region.
Simon Howatson, chief executive of Code digital skills academy, said:
“Companies are increasingly recognising the importance of digital skills in their workforces.
“As the leading provider in the north-east for businesses which want to upskill their employees, we are passionate about training the next generation of data experts.
“Apprenticeships are a great way for people to learn vital new skills, and they are rewarding for businesses – leading to greater productivity and allowing firms to expand and upskill their workforce.
“As an employer, you can also get funding from the government to help pay for apprenticeship training.
“We’re proud to have partnered with Seriös and would welcome partnerships with other likeminded firms which want to equip their workforce with the skills of the future.”
Paul Davison, managing director from Seriös Group, said:
“As an organisation we recognise the importance of investing in people, and we are delighted to be in a position to recruit apprentices to help support our business growth.
“Our chief operating officer David Milnes actually came through the apprentice scheme himself, so we understand that upskilling the apprentices whilst helping them meet their personal goals and aspirations can provide them a great foundation for their whole career.
“We chose to partner with Code as our training provider and have found their approach to be extremely flexible, with some great candidates being presented for interview.
“The whole process has been well managed, and we are extremely excited to be welcoming the first of our apprentices who will be starting with us in early June.”

The primary role of a data analyst is to collect, organise and study data to provide business insight. Data analysts are typically involved with managing, cleansing, abstracting and aggregating data, and conducting a range of analytical studies on that data. They work across a variety of projects, providing technical data solutions to a range of stakeholders/customers issues. They document and report the results of data analysis activities making recommendations to improve business performance. They have a good understanding of data structures, database systems and procedures and the range of analytical tools used to undertake a range of different types of analyses.
