Over a billion data records (1.37 billion) were compromised in 2016, almost twice (86%) as many as in 2015, claims digital security firm Gemalto. This works out at 3,776,738 records lost or stolen every day. The 2016 Breach Level Index reveals that North America accounted for 80% of all data breaches in 2016. However, Gemalto expects Europe to account for a greater share next year when GDPR comes into force and companies dealing with EU citizen data must report a breach.
