Goodwood return for Arrow Electronics and Sam Schmidt

Arrow Electronics and paralysed racing driver Sam Schmidt continued their partnership at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, with Schmidt driving up Goodwood’s iconic 1.86km Hillclimb in a specially modified 2021 McLaren 720S Spider sports car.

Modifications made by Arrow Electronics enable Schmidt, co-owner of the Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar team and former Indy Racing League driver, to drive the semi-autonomous motorcar (SAM Car) using head and mouth controls and voice commands.

Infrared cameras mounted on the dashboard enable Schmidt to steer left by looking left and steer right by looking right, while a ‘sip-and-puff’ device enables him to accelerate or brake by inhaling or exhaling.

Arrow also exhibited its SemiAutonomous Mobility (SAM) Suit exoskeleton at the Festival of Speed’s Future Lab and a prototype facial recognition steering system for the SAM Car that is in development and has been successfully tested at low speeds.
