My life in IT: David Trump, BOM IT Solutions

Bristol-based IT services provider BOM IT Solutions has appointed David Trump as Cyber Security Solutions Director. Previously employed at Phoenix Datacom and before that at BT Global Services, Trump will be responsible for establishing the family-owned company’s new dedicated cyber security division and updating its existing offering with technologies like Managed Detection and Response (MDR), Network Detection and Response (NDR) and Zero Trust methodologies. Founded more than 60 years ago, BOM IT Solutions provides IT support services, business systems and managed services to more than 150 SME and enterprise customers in the UK and overseas, with a particular concentration in the South West and Wales. Here, we ask David Trump about his life in IT.

Technology Reseller (TR): What was your first job in IT?

David Trump (DT): After finishing my degree in International Business Management at The University of Central England, my first job in IT was as an Account Manager at BT Global Services. At the time, knowing nothing about technology other than how to use a computer and mobile phone, it was a real baptism of fire!

TR: Did you get into IT by accident or design?

DT: I can safely say, it was not by design. I had a large student debt, which I wanted to pay off as soon as I could. Working at BT gave me the opportunity to earn a decent wage, while exposing me to how a large corporation worked. This did come with challenges though – regulation, bureaucracy and my inexperience – which meant it was a slow, hard slog at times. It did, however, give me a great insight into the challenges businesses face and helped me to establish my career in IT.

TR: Do you see IT as a career or a lifestyle?

DT: It has certainly turned into an interest. In today’s day and age technology surrounds us and impacts our lives, both professionally and personally, so it’s good to have a deep understanding of how it works and how it can be used to our benefit.

I really enjoy what I do and I’m particularly looking forward to establishing BOM IT’s new cyber security division; it’s an exciting new arm to the BOM IT services portfolio that will enable our existing and new customers to reap the rewards of a wraparound service.

That said, I have a young family and believe it’s important to have a good work-life balance. As the great Ferris Bueller once said: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once-in-awhile, you could miss it!”

TR: What excites you most about working in IT today?

DT: The pace at which technology changes. I’m fortunate in that I regularly speak with some of the most creative minds in the industry and I’m continually staggered at the innovation being developed to automate and orchestrate tasks that once would have taken a person hours to achieve.

TR: And what are the biggest frustrations or challenges?

DT: One of my biggest frustrations, and I completely understand the thinking behind it, is that most organisations continue to put cost above necessity. Rather than making decisions on the merits of the technology, cost is usually the defining factor.

One of the things that attracted me to BOM IT Solutions was the team’s passion and expertise in the products and services they offer. It enables BOM IT to offer clients real value for money and, importantly, bespoke packages that are unique to each customer’s own set of business needs. Working closely with clients to devise the correct IT solution strategy for them is a hugely rewarding part of the job.

TR: In what areas do you think the IT industry could do better?

DT: Having more diversity is essential in any industry, not only IT, and it is great to see the younger generation moving through the ranks and more and more women joining the sector and taking prominent board level positions, but there’s always more that can be done.

I also believe that company Board of Directors should operate a ‘back to the floor’ mentality, engaging with staff members on the frontline, so to speak, to canvass their thoughts and opinions – I think they would be genuinely surprised and impressed by the responses. You never know, they may even learn a thing or two!

TR: What do you hope to achieve in your new role?

DT: We have some exciting projects in the pipeline. First and foremost, I will be concentrating on establishing BOM IT’s new security division. That’s a project I am really looking forward to getting stuck into.

On top of that, we aim to ensure we have a product and services portfolio worthy not only of our enterprise and corporate mid-market customers but also our smaller SME customers. We are also looking at accreditations and certifications, for instance becoming ISO27001 Certified.

Beyond this, we will have to wait and see!

TR: What advice would you give a young person considering a career in IT?

DT: Don’t be afraid to be bold and innovative; if you think there is a better way of doing things, make yourself heard and get people to take notice.
