Biodegradeable SIM

Workz is helping mobile network operators (MNOs) to reduce their environmental footprint by introducing a biodegradable SIM card, which can also be safely recycled with other oil-based plastic. Claimed to biodegrade completely in landfill or through composting, the EcoSIM is one of several sustainability initiatives introduced by Workz, which is already ISO 14001 certified for Environmental Management. Others include modfying designs to halve plastic consumption per customer; introducing virtual alternatives, such as eSIM; using recycled materials in packaging; and optimising supply chains to cut the use of energy and unsustainable materials. In 2019, 5.5 billion SIM cards were produced worldwide.

5G private network

Cellnex UK has been contracted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to build an ultra-fast 5G private network in Basingstoke’s central business district. Supported by the Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership and the University of Surrey 5G Innovation Centre, the 5G core network and Radio Access Network will provide indoor and outdoor connectivity to more than 100 companies located in Basing View and a 5G Living Lab, where industry partners can showcase 5G applications for smart city, Internet of Things, immersive retail/leisure, AR/VR, transport and digital health. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council hopes the 5G network will attract businesses to the area and enable those already there to develop, trial and bring to market new products, services and applications.
